How Do I Understand People Better?

You may not know what to do with your life, but one thing is certain. You will be working with others, so how do you understand people better?

To succeed in life, it’s necessary to be an expert in social interactions, especially office politics. Understanding people will significantly improve your overall life because you will always need something from someone.

These are some of the simplest and easiest things to start doing, similar to understanding the simple unwritten rules of life.

1. Learn Empathy to understand people better

Put yourself in other people’s shoes, and then you will know how to treat them.

A new client arrives late to your meeting. Your first reaction might be frustration, but if you take a second to put yourself in their shoes you will know she’s had to care for her sick child last night.

Because of this, she’s been running behind on many things that day. instead of showing your frustration, showing empathy and acknowledging her situation will get you further.

2. Be Genuinely Curious About Other People

This is a great lesson because curiosity applies to understanding people better and excelling in your career. To discover more on the importance of being curious click here.

So that you come up with creative talking points, be interested in people’s backstories. The whole point of learning how to better understand people is to improve the number of positive interactions you have.

You’ve been misled by movies that you have to be talkative. This is not true, people love talking about themselves and their interests.

Once at a Christmas party, I found a girl I was interested in and I was trying to figure out what she could be interested in. I noticed her screensaver of her Maltese, one quick question and she couldn’t help but talk about her for the rest of the night and on the way home.

3. Be Present

Nowadays, I see so many people out with someone who spends the whole time on their phone. As simple and dumb as this sounds, there are so many people failing at this.

No one should have to compete for your attention, especially not against a phone.

I am keeping this point short because it’s obvious, put your phone down and socialize.
