A huge lesson in business, funny enough, I first learned about the dangerous position of having one client pay all your bills for you at the start of a Mad Men episode (Men S4E2). Having one client is risky and everyone would agree, but no one does anything about it. I see so many people not going out there and building a pipeline of, new job opportunities, new friends, new relationships and then wonder why they reek of desperation.
Out of the five, only one was paying all the bills and even worse it had been like this for more than six months. No new contracts were coming in to balance it out and not become reliant on just one client.
I am almost certain that Napoleon Bonaparte himself has a quote on this and it probably goes something like “Always be getting new business!”.
Having One Client, Income Stream, or Friend Means You’re Vulnerable
I know I started off talking about my colleague’s business and how vulnerable they are with one client paying all their bills, but it’s more than that.
People can connect more with the one income stream point of view (even if they aren’t doing anything to change it).
For most reading this you only have one income stream and it’s your job. So imagine that tomorrow you get fired, you’d have probably wished that you had come up with come second stream of income.
What if instead, you were looking for other opportunities to develop a second income stream to balance things out? Eventually, if you do things right, you’ll end up balanced out and won’t be as vulnerable.
That’s always the goal, make the moves to get into favorable positions for success or sometimes not be vulnerable.
Always Be Closing A New Client
In my last viral post, What To Avoid As A Young Man In My Early Twenties, I forgot to add a line about always be closing. Sure you can think all I am talking about is sales and clients and customers, but it’s actually more than that.
You must always be meeting new girls, new groups, looking for a new job. Keeping a pipeline of each one of these shifts your mindset from a scarcity mindset to an abundant one.
You meet 3 girls in a week and have a few dates lined up, you are being yourself because you don’t have all of your eggs in this one basket going great.
You have two more lined up anyway, but even before you go on the second date, you’ve already lined up another date brining your total back up to 3.
Always be closing, and you’ll never give off the stench of desperation and neediness.
